Schools are out for summer and that means holidays! Lots of time spent together, having fun and making memories. Many of us don’t have a lot of expendable cash at the moment and so the summer months, with children at home, can be fairly expensive. This is where the idea of a staycation comes into play. You can enjoy the holidays at home and still have a fantastic time. Who needs a private villa with a swimming pool anyway? Let’s have a look at family staycation ideas for the summer.
Use Your Home As A Base
Firstly, for your family staycation, you can use your home as a base. Being able to return to your home at the end of each day of adventure means you know you have a comfortable bed to relax in. You have food in the cupboards, toys for the kids to play with and hot water available for a decent shower or bath. You’ve made your home comfortable, so why go anywhere else?

Explore What’s On Your Doorstep
So many of us see the holidays as a time to go somewhere miles away from our normal lives. When was the last time you truly appreciated what is happening in your local area? Many of us have attractions on our doorsteps that we have never actually visited. Check a 5-mile radius around where you live and you’ll discover so many different things you could get up to as a family. A picnic in the park, leisure facilities and local museums you’ve never set foot in. The summer brings plenty of pop-up events too, such as markets, fairs and fun days. You’ll be surprised at how many days you can spend nearby without getting bored!
Head To The Coast
How close is your local beach? In the United Kingdom you are never further than 70 miles away from the coast. That means you can be at the beach within a couple of hours. Heading to the coast is a fantastic family staycation activity for the summer. You might need to take your wallet for some ice cream but the beach is the perfect place to make memories. Take some boules for a competitive family game. Swim in the sea and feel that sand between your toes. You’ll have plenty of laughs and be sure to grab a portion of fish and chips before you head home. The kids will sleep on the journey back after all of that sea air!
Go Camping
How about a few nights under canvas? Camping is a great way to unite a family. Everyone has a part to play and once the tent is up, there is something massively underrated about a game of Uno! The smell of bacon and fresh coffee in the morning air is simply wonderful. Dark sky locations will give you amazing displays of stars. Of course, if you can’t get a campsite, why not camp in your garden? Family staycation is fun for everyone!
House Swap With Friends
If you’re avoiding paying for air travel and hotels, how about a house swap with friends or family? You can throw some bits and pieces in the car and then use someone else’s house as a base, for free. You might be able to enjoy new tourist attractions and theme parks. Maybe there are new cities you want to explore or their property is a short train ride from the capital city? Discovering different places with a base to return to is great during the summer months. You’ll have more room than in a hotel and have those creature comforts available to you as well.
There are lots of ways to enjoy a family staycation this summer. Take plenty of photos, reconnect with the children and make this summer one you’ll remember.
